I find that this black polymer does not have the "warmth" or "core" to the sound I find in the earlier instruments made of the mottled gray polymer. These lengthy compositions became known as symphonies and were usually divided into four parts. If you would like to buy a proper, decent student model oboe, buy a YOB241. I would typically recommend the 220 to students over the 240, primarily because the 220 is cheaper and built more for ensemble playing, while the 240 "short" bore is designed more for soloistic playing; however, this is a subtle distinction and, if you have the funds for either, I recommend trying both models to determine which is best for you.
